Dr. Hans-Jörg Heusser is an art historian, journalist and business consultant. He now leads his own firm in Zurich for strategic advice on cultural matters. Until August 2010, he was director of the Swiss Institute for Art Research (SIK-ISEA)for around two decades, in Zurich and Lausanne. Under his leadership the SIK-ISEA has developed very dynamically and has become a center of Swiss art history and an internationally renowned Institute for Advanced Study.
Heusser studied law and business administration, then art history, East Asian art history and religious history. He completed his studies in 1978 at the University of Zurich with a doctorate in art history. Earlier in his career he worked as a journalist for several newspapers and as an editor and scriptwriter for the Swiss Television DRS. For nine years he was president of the Swiss Section of the Association Internationale des Critiques d’Art (AICA) and for six years also international vice president. From 1995 – 2002 he chaired the Art Commission of the City of Zurich. From 1998 – 2004 he was founding president of the International Association of Research Institutes in the History of Art (RIHA), nowadays consisting of 28 leading research institutes in Europe and overseas.
Heusser is the author of various books, catalog essays and articles on art and the modern and contemporary art scene. From 1983-1993 he was commissioned by the “Association Internationale des Critiques d’Art,” as Publisher and Editor in Chief of the half-yearly journal “AICARC – Bulletin of the Archives and Documentation Centers for Modern and Contemporary Art” published in english. He organised a number of Swiss and international conferences (Colloquia) and was very active at home and abroad with teaching and lecturing work. Since 2010 he has been a member of the Executive Committee of the newly established Master’s program “Art Market Studies”, at the University of Zurich.
Heusser was and is involved as a trustee and art consultant for various cultural foundations. Even as a director of SIK-ISEA, he has consulted authorities and large corporations in matters of art and art business management for many years. He continues this work today with his own consulting firm.
